Bamboo flooring is everywhere in Hotel Jakarta

Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam is the greenest hotel in the Netherlands. Various bamboo applications have been installed throughout the building, including the 2.750 m² Bamboo Elite flooring. The floor, in a warm High Density® Caramel optic, has been installed in the entrance, restaurants, meeting rooms, walkways and suites. In combination with the light colour bamboo ceiling and wallcovering and the unique tropical inner garden, an atmosphere is created in which nature prevails.

Read the success story

"The use of bamboo forges a narrative across time and geography. This traditional material of the Far East connects Hotel Jakarta to a chapter of Dutch-Indonesian shipping history written on site. Bamboo is a natural, highly modern answer to the present need to create sustainable environments."

Natural and stylish material

A wooden floor is popular thanks to its natural appearance and high-quality image. Non-renewable materials, such as PVC or vinyl, are used because they offer a long service life and require minimal maintenance. Whether you choose the ecological durability, appearance or high quality, a MOSO® Bamboo floor is more than a fully-fledged alternative to these materials. Bamboo grows extremely fast and is processed in our factory in such a way that it meets the highest standards. For example, Bamboo Industriale Density®, with a wear layer of almost 10 mm, can withstand thousands of daily visitors to the Citylife Shopping District in Milan, Italy’s largest shopping mall, and the floor achieves the high fire resistance class Bfl-s1, thus eliminating the need for fire-resistant impregnation.

Innovative and unique

While wood and ceramic tile floors have been used for years, bamboo is still a relatively new material. MOSO® considers it a challenge to develop the best bamboo floors, together with architects and installation partners. A good example of this is Bamboo UltraDensity®: developed in collaboration with AREP as a natural floor for numerous French railway stations. Before the floor could be installed, it had to be certified by the French official construction institute CSTB. The tests showed that Bamboo UltraDensity® achieved a U4P4C2E2 classification: better than any other wood species. The material is extremely stable, hard and durable and therefore suitable for the toughest conditions: in very high traffic areas and even in semi-outdoor (covered but not closed) areas.

Versatile and CO2 neutral

MOSO® supplies bamboo floors in the styles Side Pressed, Plain Pressed and High Density, in the colours Ecru and Caramel. All these styles are available in the Bamboo Supreme collection, the relatively thin and small 2-layer floor with various finishing possibilities, including an extra strong lacquer for commercial use. An official life cycle analysis (LCA) conducted proves that solid MOSO® bamboo flooring products such as Bamboo Supreme are CO2 neutral or better during the product lifespan. Thanks to these results, MOSO® Bamboo products can achieve extra credits for sustainable building certification such as LEED and BREEAM-NL.

Extremely hard and durable

Moso bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth. The bamboo stems grow from an underground root system and after 5 years a stem can be harvested, while the others continue to grow. This means the bamboo can be used without destroying the forest. After harvesting, the Moso bamboo stems are split and the outer skin is removed. By treating bamboo with steam, the light brown colour becomes more intense and the yellow shade disappears, we call this Ecru. By increasing the temperature and pressure during the steam treatment a warm brown colour appears we call caramel. After treating and drying, the strips are ready to be joined in several ways to make the final product. Depending on the method of laminating or compressing the strips, a bamboo floor is created in the style Side Pressed (narrow strips side by side), Plain Pressed (wide strips side by side) or High Density® (compressed under high pressure). After production and finishing, the bamboo floor is stronger and harder than almost any other wood.
