Bamboo in the public space

Outdoor furniture forms an important part of the public space. The style and material used determines the appearance and quality of the furniture. Architects and manufacturers therefore consciously choose materials that fit the space and have a long life span. Bamboo is a durable, natural material that is very suitable for use in outdoor furniture.

Bamboo offers several benefits in comparison with other materials when used as outdoor furniture:

The advantages of bamboo

Bamboo offers several advantages over other materials in the application as outdoor furniture:

  • the natural appearance and natural greying;
  • high stability and long service life;
  • the extreme hardness and therefore vandalism resistance;
  • the fire resistant properties of the material reach fire class B-s1-d0 (EN 13501-1);
  • CO2 neutral MOSO® Bamboo Products contribute to sustainable building, including extra credits for LEED and BREEAM building certification.

Bamboo outdoor furniture from beams

Street furniture with wood or bamboo is on the rise after years of steel and concrete have dominated the streets. Bamboo X-treme® furniture beams are preserved due to the Thermo-Density (thermal treatment and compression) production process. The beams are finished with Sikkens Cetol and can be supplied as standard product in various dimensions or custom-made. Bamboo X-treme® greys naturally and is extremely stable, which means that the beams remain nice and straight. Among the technical properties of Bamboo X-treme® beams, the hardness and the robustness, resulting in fire class B-s1-d0, use class 4 (EN 335) and durability class 1 (EN 350 tested according to CEN/TS 15083-2) are particularly appreciated.

Bamboo outdoor furniture from boards

Bamboo X-treme® is the most widely used exterior material in bamboo. More than 10 years after its introduction as decking board, the material has proven to be very durable and easy to maintain. Due to the Thermo-Density® production process, bamboo boards are preserved. Thanks to their smooth surface, the boards are also suitable for use as furniture. An example of furniture made of Bamboo X-treme® decking boards can be found on the roof terrace of Expo Porte de Versailles Hall 7 in Paris, the largest congress hall in Europe.

Examples of bamboo street furniture

Bamboo is still a less used material for the production of street furniture. The reason for this is that, for a long time, there were no high-quality bamboo beams for outdoor applications. MOSO® has stimulated the development of this material and proves, not only with the necessary test results, but also with convincing reference projects that bamboo has now become a serious sustainable alternative to wood and other outdoor materials.

"The possibilities of bamboo applications go as far as the creativity of the architect and the quality of the processor."
