Sustainable façade MOSO® by Gradhermetic

The façade has been covered with a (hidden and demountable) shutter system, made with custom made MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® Beams with dimensions of 35×30 mm. The solid one-piece profiles are installed with different lengths on Gradhermetic’s aluminium frames. A magnificent solution that combines solar protection and ventilation in a sustainable way . When selecting the material for the façade, MOSO® Bamboo was selected by the architects because it is the sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, but also due to the technical characteristics that meet the highest construction requirements.

"For us and for the developer (Stoneweg), it was the right decision (ASPRIMA Award 2018) to use bamboo as a façade cladding. It is the sustainable and long-lasting alternative that we expect to be used in future architectural projects of all kinds,"

Ricardo de Landaluce Arias, Architect Responsible for the Alfonso X project at Hans Abaton

The benefits of Bamboo X-treme® Beams as a façade

The advantages of using MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® Beams for a façade compared to other types of wood are:

  • It offers the highest possible durability class according to EU standards (Class 1 (EN 350 / CEN/TS 15083-2), simulated graveyard test / Class 1 (EN 350 / CEN/TS 15083-1).
  • No periodic maintenance is required, unless the warm brown colour must be preserved. When the material is left to grey, time and money can be saved.
  • Bamboo X-treme® Cladding can be classified as Class B-s1-d0 (EN 13501-1) without fire retardants (unlike other types of wood). It is applicable for buildings with strict fire safety requirements, such as appartments, commercial buildings and petrol stations.
  • The MOSO® by Gradhermetic product range for solar control is available as beams (3 profiles) and boards (1 profiles).
  • The Gradhermetic system features easy installation, removability due to its clip fixing system and minimal or no mechanical maintenance.
  • Sustainable and CO2 neutral: MOSO® Bamboo Products are the sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and other less environmentally friendly materials. Bamboo grows extremely fast rate, which allows the bamboo stems to reach maturity in just 4-5 years. As it is a plant with a rhizome system, which favours its growth, each year, 20-25% of a bamboo forest can be harvested without deforestation.

"The mobility of the Gradhermetic shutter systems creates a dynamic façade, which offers solar protection and an aesthetic to the building that changes according to the day and the time of day. All this is combined with the MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® Beams, which add warmth and robustness to the project. It has been a pleasure to collaborate on this project with the Hans Abaton studio and a great success to have MOSO® Bamboo in our Gradhermetic applications"

Daniel Chirinos, Specifier at Gradhermetic.
